Without the assistance of a community board that I was so disgusted with because at the time they were rife with conflicts of interests (hint: CB3 is called the community bar and the chair is called the bar czar of the East Village) and the last meeting I ever attended --- Lisa Kaplan who works for Rosie Mendez shushed me along with David McWater and Susan Stetzer for attempting to explain to Christine Shakespeare, NYU rep. why Andrew Berman and the entire community singles out poor NYU -- a not profit from all others. Gee, that would be because NYU mega dormed the East Village to death. Here is my letter from DOT verifying I got the speed bumps and thanking me for my interest in school safety. http://suzannahbtroy.blogspot.com/2009/08/dot-approved-speed-bumps-for-anna.html Original post with the YouTube.
I am also proud to tell you several years ago, I got the Parks Dept. to put bathroom doors back in the Tompkins Square Women's bathroom. They had been removed because of all kinds of very disturbing activities and I suggested smaller doors for modesty that will allow women including Mom's with small children some privacy which should be a basic right. Note to Mom's and baby sitters, there are also children's bathrooms in the back that the public are not permitted to use; only kids escorted by an adult.
Yes the problems are still there but hopefully less discouraged by what I call "smart doors" meaning small enough to discourage uncool activity but big enough to provide some dignity. Good citizens get to use the bathroom and I don't take that luxury for granted. I was most proud to realize my achievement when I saw a woman in a wheelchair with her companion use the handicap stall and close the door.
Harry, from the Parks Dept. figured out a not frills ingenious way to anchor the soap dispensers in a simple way that protects them from being tampered with which was happening constantly. Thank you Harry!!!!!! Especially now with Swine Flu fears having soap to wash your hands at Tompkins is even more appreciated.
It may sound small to you but it is not and I am proud with the help of the many different departments including the NYPD as I recall I reached out to as well for the bathroom doors, I got results needed to help the community. Thanks and gratitude to all that assisted me.
