This spring is going by so quickly. The ripening peaches, nectarines, strawberries, and blooming roses in the garden tell us that summer is just around the corner.
It is finally time to plant out our second annual pizza garden! Thanks to a generous donation from a neighbor and the Kitchen Club, we now have the funds to purchase the good soil we need to finish our new bed, which is double in size from last year. We are going to plant veggies that taste good on top of pizza, such as tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers, as well as some squash, zucchini, and broccoli, and herbs such as basil, oregano, rosemary, and marjoram. We will also be planting berries such as blueberries in the shadier areas, and salad greens too.
Like last year, the kids and gardeners will tend the garden all summer in preparation for our pizza garden harvest party this fall, where we will harvest the veggies, make pizza, and savor our delicious harvest, as well as share the veggies with neighbors throughout the harvest season.
Thanks to all of you "seed nurses" who have been caring for the baby plants on your window sills. Please bring your charges (a.k.a. the plants) to the garden on or before this Friday.
The planting will take place this Friday, beginning at 3PM. Take heart if you are working until later, as we probably won't finish until it starts getting dark around 8 PM, so come by after work!
So here's the lowdown:
What: Pizza Garden Planting Party!
When: Friday, June 6th 3 PM-7:30/8 PM
Where: Children's Magical Garden de Carmen Rubio
Norfolk and Stanton St. L.E.S.
Come with just your lovely selves, or bring kids, friends, and family.
We especially need photographers to document the event, and other volunteers. Please email me if you know you can attend and would like to volunteer.
We are also passing the hat.... as we could use some donations to make our plans for the garden a reality this summer. We need new tools such as shovels, rakes, and pruners. We hope to plant native woodland plants under the trees, and to teach the kids about the native plants in our area. We hope to expand the "old fish pond" bed, plant more evergreens, and ultimately construct a small greenhouse/classroom. The kids are dreaming big, and envision a new fish pond with a solar powered waterfall to keep mosquito larva at bay. However, the very first thing we need is lots more good soil for planting.
Cash donations are always appreciated, or you can make a tax deductible check to the More Gardens! Fund, sent to Children's Magical c.o. Kate Temple-West, 153 Norfolk St. #1B New York, NY. 10002 Every donation helps mightily. None is too small, or too big ;)
We hope to see many of you on Friday.
Hope you are enjoying the sunshine!
Thanks,
Kate Temple-West, garden director with Alfredo Feliciano, director and founder
