CB 2 Institutions Committee Meeting 6:30 tonight re: NYU plans for Silver Towers superblock -- NYU Silver Bldg 32 Waverly rm. 809
Email from Andrew Berman:
Dear friend,
I wanted to remind you (or let you know) that tonight Community Board #2's Institutions Committee will receive a presentation from NYU and continue to discuss NYU's plans for development on the Silver Towers superblock. The meeting will begin at 6:30 at NYU's Silver Building, 32 Waverly Place, rm. 809, and the public will be given an opportunity to comment.
As you know, NYU has been considering some massive plans for development on the Silver Towers superblock, including one or more 40-story towers on the Morton Williams supermarket and/or the green space at the north end of the plaza, as well as large development on the Coles Gym site (see www.nyu.edu/nyu.plans.2031/pdf/08-0423openhouseboards.pdf#page=13). GVSHP has been working with the residents in and around the complex and local elected officials to secure landmark designation for the Silver Towers complex, to ensure that inappropriate development does not take place on the superblock. Last month the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a hearing on our landmarking proposal, and the public testimony was almost unanimous in support of landmark designation for the entire superblock and against NYU being allowed to build large towers on either the supermarket or the plaza sites (see www.gvshp.org/silvertowershearing.htm).
Tonight will be another critical opportunity to hear NYU's plans and to let both NYU and the Community Board know that we want to ensure that the scale, character, and fabric of our neighborhood is preserved, that the landmark-worthy design of the Silver Towers complex is respected. It's also an important opportunity to let the Community Board know that NYU should be discouraged from pursuing large scale expansion plans in this oversaturated area.
I hope to see you tonight.

what happened at this meeting last night?
In spite of the late July date, there was a big turnout for the poorly advertised Community Board #2 Institutions Committee meeting on NYU's plans for developing the Silver Towers superblock. NYU had no new information to present -- just a recapitulation of their desire to build a 40-story tower at the north end of the superblock on what is now green space. The crowd was not very happy with the idea. NYU said they would not be moving farther with their plans until December.
