NY Blood Center calls, they need platelets and my thoughts on greed and a new short story "The Blooders" is a working title
I am too tired but please if you can donate blood, either whole blood or platelets the NY Blood Center needs donations. http://www.nybloodcenter.org/
I want to donate and I feel badly when The New York Blood Center calls me and I have to say no. I feel very drained and I don't think I could pass the iron test. I am so moved by the selfless people that work for the people of this great city and I almost cried when I hung up the phone. I told the woman God Bless you and she said the same to me.
New York is an extreme city in every way including the selfless in contrast to the selfish.
I am too drained physically and emotionally and I am so upset by community crushing development, eviction battles like 47 East 3rd Street, concerns for the safety of the people of New York from infrastructure breaks as well as construction related accidents...my head is just pounding. As anyone knows who has been following my blog I am very worried about water coming down through the rusted ceiling in the subway at Union Square this week. I just over ate too which makes me feel awful and unattractive too.
I would like to write a short fictional story about a future where I imagine the need for blood one day will be so great and blood supply for donations scare that "they"-the rich will keep people--blood donors as "guests" in non-stressed environments. For those who don't understand my dark sense of humor when I write "guest" I mean hostage or slave. I have been thinking of this story as a dark story about billionaires or several, actually a new wave of mega wealth and instead of real estate it becomes about blood, the future brings a need for blood transfusions and they have so much political clout that they get away with taking people that have they blood type they need and if they can't "buy" them as guests they "collect them" kind of a homage to John Fowles "The Collector" and a comment on the greed that is making over NYC and endangering all our lives because it is all too fast and safety concerns including infrastructure have not been put first as they should have been.
I also think of Alistar Economakis and in my opinion he has been violent not with his fists but in other ways more even more disturbing with the tenants of 47 East 3rd Street because like so many of us -- we have become inconvenient -- truth, voices, our presence in our very own community so he attempts to turn the tables or not look in the mirror and there are so many mirrored buildings in this new make-over take over of NYC post 9-11, so many mirrors to look in to but people see want they want to see especially when we won't go quietly. Like so many my feeling is he would attempt to demonize the very people he is victimizing as his latest press interview reveals and I posted on this blog. How violent is it to rip people out of their homes and the community they love and from the community that loves them?
I was thinking of calling my new fiction satire-- story "The Blooders" and even have many mega rich billionaires or a new word that exceeds billionaires for the future when billionaires will be too low income to be running NYC as in NYC = Oligarch Central not a democracy. Instead of real estate it will be about our very lives and the need for blood transfusions with only a limited group of people that can donate blood because they don't have anti bodies to a common virus and their blood has become more important than real estate. The laws favors the developers, real estate magnates, landlords and now the laws have been changed to give the rich power over the poor and middle income in the same ways the pressure us to move out of our homes and attempt to silence us, shut us up and shut us down they now take it even further with our bodies. One character, a very rich spoiled man, a satirical figure who didn't make his own mega wealth who goes to shocking extremes to traffic "blooders" as well as use them-- the only people left in this fictional story that can give blood (they are special because of their blood.
Maybe I will add that a powerful pharmaceutical company convinces the mega rich of a vaccine that ultimately backfires hence the need for the blooders ==blood donors that are from the middle and lower income because they did not have the money for the life saving vaccine that was not it turns out life saving.
The blood donors are stripped of their humanity turned in to a commodity but the trafficers of blooders find that like plants -- if they are not cared for they die. It is not just food and water -- the quality of their blood becomes less so in this futuristic satire they trafficers and the "keepers" have to use all kinds of technology to create illusions to keep the blood donors alive and some how content.
They have to be kept as happy as possible for their health or they can't give blood and the warped sci-fi technological ways the "owners" oops I mean keepers keep them. It would be like abuse of eminent domain, the use of the laws and deep pockets but now it is our bodies and the rich feel they have entitlement over our very bodies and of course it takes place here in NYC some time in the future.
The terrible community crushing development, the horrible death toll and injuries that increases from construction, the terrible stresses of people fighting evictions, small businesses here today and gone tomorrow have me greatly upset and this is part of my artistic creative way to attempt at catharsis.
