Community Crusher Columbia University attempts to stop protest, Columbia and NYU are community destroyers in the name of higher ed

Columbia University is playing hardball and is trying to stop this protest!!!!!!

Columbia U. and NYU use the velvet hammer of higher ed to crush our communities.  NYU doesn't need to abuse eminent domain to destroy and displace entire communities with friends like the mayor and mega millionaire socialite city planner Amanda Burden.

The email sent to me I will post on the comment section -- please read!!!!

Below is press release about our march and demonstration at Columbia tomorrow. For the past four years the students and community have held joint on-campus actions in April which highlighted the opposition and criti
cism of the expansion plan. This year, Columbia is playing hard ball because it fears that the 40th anniversary of 1968 will put its current eviction plan in an historically bad light. Despite Pres. Lee Bollinger’s constant references to his love of “free speech”, the behind the scenes efforts by his administration to squash dissent have been increasingly evident – especially in the past weeks.

Come hear about it, and see for yourself on Saturday. We WILL be marching onto the campus.
Below the press release is the Coalition to Preserve Community’s set of demands articulated by the community and developed since the expansion was announced. Come join our march from St. Mary’s Church and rally with the students.

1968 – 2008: Community Fights Columbia’s Harlem Expansions
Alumni from the class of ’68 and others from around the country have flown in this week to commemorate the 40 year anniversary of an important historical moment in Harlem in Spring 1968. Columbia’s PR machine is doing its best prevent the anger over today's eviction plan from stopping their current plans in West Harlem and greater zoning changes on 125th Street which it has helped to implement. They want their alumni to believe that Columbia's ways have changed. In reality, Columbia's plans today are much worse. Forty years ago they threatened to take parkland from Harlem; today they threaten to destroy the very fabric of the community itself with displacement, eminent domain abuse, an environmentally hazardous construction plan and placement of biohazard lab #3’s in a residential community.

For the past four years, Columbia students and the Harlem community have held joint protests in April at the center of the campus on 116th Street. Yesterday, the Columbia administration advised students from Student Coalition on Expansion and Gentrification (SCEG) that the only place for them this Saturday was on Pupin Plaza, an obscure area on the north campus, hidden from view. They said that Harlem marchers could not come through the main gates and instead would have to use a back entrance on 120th Street, climbing up the stairs. They also asked SCEG for a copy of a march permit from the Coalition to Preserve Community. On Saturday, we will come to the gates of Columbia. “There are events open to the public on campus and 116th Street runs through the campus and it is still a public street and it is our street.” declared Hamidullah Al-Amin. “We will not let Columbia deceive people about their current plans. We will not let them make protest a thing of the past. We will not let them make Harlem a place of history, some undemocratic museum piece.”

WE WILL FIGHT FOR OUR HOMES & BE HERE LONG AFTER COLUMBIA'S EXPANSION PLAN IS DEFEATED!

STOP COLUMBIA'S TAKE-OVER OF WEST HARLEM – READ OUR DEMANDS:

The hasty and rigged political process which recently gave Columbia the green light for its proposed expansion into Manhattanville left the most significant issues unresolved. This both guarantees the failure of Columbia's plans in their present form and increases animosity between the town and gown communities. If Columbia expects to succeed, it must work with the community rather than against it.
The community demands that Columbia resolve these issues:

1) No eminent domain or forced removal. Respect the rights of residents and businesses. Any relocation must be entirely voluntary without any coercion or pressure whatsoever.
2) Preserve the community's existing housing stock. Instead of promoting the displacement of thousands of mostly Latino and African American working class residents from low income housing in the surrounding area and continuing its policy of deregulating thousands of apartments, Columbia must use its considerable financial, political, and other resources - including professional and legal expertise - to ensure the continuation and strengthening of rent regulations, the viability of public housing, as well as existing low and moderate income cooperatives and federal and state subsidized housing. CU’s acceptance of the displacement of 5,000 people, outlined in its Environmental Impact Statement, is an unacceptable price to pay for this expansion.
3) Ensure that the 6000 promised jobs are indeed created specifically for local residents, that they are good union jobs, and democratic organizing of workers is allowed.
4) No biohazard 3 labs in this highly populated area, on an earthquake fault, and in a flood plain; and no gas-fired power plants in an area already suffering severe asthma rates.
5) No “bathtub.” Construction only under particular buildings with connections only between adjacent buildings and not below streets.
6) No destruction of historical landmarks and bulk and size of new buildings contextual with the surrounding area.
