Happy Suzannah Apple Suzannah, yes I converted and once you do mac you never go back

I had an awesome teacher today and they all amaze me because some how they can tune in and hear me, teach me...I resisted and resisted and once you do mac you never go back...they are teaching me and I am learning for the first time.

Yes, I want Apple to set the trend and support small businesses by some how incorporating our eco-minded small businesses -- that is my dream for Apple and for our beloved small business.

My teacher today amazed me -- I can only describe him as so East Village!

updates from Andrew Berman/St. Vincents/Rudin luxury condo and Trump, read on!

Dear Readers:  I am posting Andrew Berman's email and adding my photo of the Trump site (Spring and Varrick) the tragedy where the City of New York lost another construction worker in this tsunami of over the top development and I am not surprised at the news Andrew Berman gives you, read on...
www.gvshp.org

Dear friend,

I have some very important news to report regarding two critical projects:

St. Vincent's/Rudin Luxury Condo and Hospital Development Plan: This morning the Landmarks Preservation Commission issued a stunning rebuke of this proposal to demolish nine buildings in the Greenwich Village Historic District and replace them with 1.3 million sq. ft. of luxury condos and a new hospital, including two of the largest buildings ever proposed for a historic district. The Commission urged preservation of the Smith, Raskob, Nurse's Residence, Spellman, and O'Toole buildings, and urged a complete re-working of plans for development on the remaining sites to match the scale and character of the surrounding neighborhood. The Commission did open the door to the possibility of the hospital building a tower on top of the O'Toole building, but even there urged a more sensitive scale and design than currently proposed.

This left St. Vincent's and their development partners the Rudins three options: file a hardship case to seek approval for demolition and new construction not allowed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission; file new plans (presumably radically different than the current ones) and go through the public hearing process again; or drop the plan entirely. St. Vincent's has since stated they will file a hardship case to seek permission to demolish the O'Toole building and construct the new hospital on the site; this will require a new set of public hearings and St. Vincent's proving through an open and public process that retaining the O'Toole building is not feasible for them to do and fulfill their charitable mission.

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation thanks the literally thousands of people and dozens of preservation and neighborhood groups from across the city whom we reached out to and who joined us in urging that this unprecedented plan be changed. It is deeply gratifying to know that our voices have been heard and made a difference -- THANK YOU! We will keep you informed as the process continues.

Trump SoHo 'Condo-Hotel': Today the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) voted to UPHOLD the City's ruling that the Trump SoHo Condo-Hotel is permissible under New York City zoning. While this is deeply disappointing, it is not unexpected, given that the BSA is composed entirely of Mayoral appointees, and they very rarely rule against fellow Mayoral agencies (such as the Department of Buildings in this case).

The good news is this means the case can finally be appealed to an independent court now that the BSA has ruled, and our allies at the SoHo Alliance are planning to file such an appeal in NY State Supreme Court shortly. While the structure is already partly built, a successful legal challenge can both have an impact on the final form of this building as well as prevent similar buildings from being constructed in the future.

Thank you to the hundreds of people who have supported the appeal thus far and to all the groups and elected officials who urged the BSA to overturn the Trump approval: City Council Zoning Subcommittee Chair Tony Avella, the Municipal Art Society, the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, the New York Industrial Retention Network, the Garment Center Industrial Development Corporation, the East Williamsburg Industrial Development Corporation, the Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center, the Council of Chelsea Block Associations, the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association, the Tribeca Community Association, the Greenwich Village Community Task Force, and Community Boards 1 & 5, Manhattan.

Myanmar global tragedy, East Village Burma eatery, Myanamar is Burma

http://suzannahbtroy.blogspot.com/2008/04/village-mingala-burmese-cuisine-free.html

Super sad news from the other side of the globe...the people of Myanmar are suffering another catastrophe and this is from Mother Nature rather than their own government although the government could make it even harder on the people.

I posted the link to the little Burmese eatery in the East Village and their window that reflects their concerns for freedom from the oppressive regime that is now called the Myanmar government formerly know as Burma.

The Red Cross is taking donations...

Alicia Hurley does respond to my concern re: Triangle Shirt factory with an email

Dear Readers:  If you have been following my blog you know I am angry with NYU for crushing our communities and I want community outreach resource centers in every mega dorm/NYU student housing that will make the students as aware of the community that we and that includes small businesses need support to remain in our very communities that we made so desirable to college kids, so much so it seems we have to move to make room for them.  This includes Stuy Town that was meant to be affordable housing on down to South St. Seaport.

I also want NYU to make a visually striking frieze to honor the victims and the historical Triangle Fire shirt  factory fire on the  building (street level)  which NYU owns (along with just about everything else and not for profit) and I want the frieze to be as be as visually striking  as the one for the FDNY on the side of the firehouse next to the World Trade Center site.

I want a frieze depicting this historical fire that like 9-11 had people holding hands as they jumped to their deaths.  These were women and girls and I found an extensive link from Cornell that attempts to list the victims and one little girl was 11 years old and it seemed from the quick look they all come from what is now called the East Village, Lower East Side and Bowery.  One woman that died lived near my Grandfather who was born in a tenement house not far from hers.

heart breaking and it has to be recognized in a powerful, impactive way that educates every passerby and moves them to remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alicia Hurley is always kind to me and I am really intense so I respect that she conducts her self with grace and kindness and hears what I say but I WANT ACTION and John Sexton and gang have done zero so far to support our community rather than crush it!

Alicia Hurley did send me info on how NYU has honored the tragedy but I need help which I will get tomorrow to download as I am still learning the abc's of technology.

MY MANTRA:   NYU COULD DO BETTER!!!!!  A LOT BETTER!!!!

If need be, NYU could give every student incentive to volunteer and help communities they occupy city wide by making it a requirement.  If students did that it would awaken them to the struggles of our community members and small businesses and they could make a difference rather than just be part of the NYU tear down of our historic community and push out of everything mom, pop and Bohemian.

I am still very tired and coping with the trauma of moving after 20 years and bigger trauma tied in with it.

Jill Freedman, underated I am guessing because sexist world, gutsy photographer NYC '70's

Hearld Tribune Article -- "Jill Freedman: Photographing New York when it was 'falling apart'

I found this article about her and I wanted to cry. At one point her negatives and cameras where in storage in Bushwick and worse she no money and health insurance to deal with breast cancer and had to lose her apt but did win her battle with breast cancer.

I am so worn out -- I can't spell, I can't even be sure I got it right so click on the link and read.

I just went from Arbus to Freedman and I am captivated by her gritty photos.  The Herald Tribune article ends with her being shocked at the changes at 42nd Street Times Square which made me think of Richard Sandler's movie!   Read this article!

Jill Freedman photo, cop and kids, is that St. Marks Place and the Old Cooper Union Building, the only one they aren't tearing down at least yet?

www.higherpictures.com/ImageViewer.aspx?id=41&s=26

I can't get the direct link to the photo but if you go to the link and click the arrow to the right, keep clicking until you see the photo "gun play"  you can see what looks like Cooper Union in the back drop and the little boy leaning against the patrol car and his friend has a toy gun in his hand. The title of the photo is "gun play" and it is the old East Village. There is even a family weaved together in a loving embrace waiting for the light to change.

+I do want to warn you to get to the photo "gun play" you have to page through some very moving photos, some evoke compassion and some show victims + they are disturbing.

I was reading the Arbus article and slip of the finger and some how I found Jill Friedman's photos of NYC and a few crime scenes and a suicide are gritty.  I realize I hit the advertisement for her webpage on The New York Times website.   I am tired.

Diane Arbus New York's texture, oddity vs shopping mega malls and ubiquitous NYU t-shirt

Please visit the Metropolitan Museum and here is a  link for  a quick peek.  The Met didn't pick the edgy characters in her haunting photos for their website although the exhibition at the Met was extraordinary and means even more to me because of the "new" hideous New York.   I picked this  Diane Arbus's image from a google search. I have a very heavy book from the exhibition at the Met that I think I saved when I had to throw out, give away and or sell my massive collection of books that I loved so much under duress and trauma more disturbing than just the regular trauma associated with moving.

I think of how much my neighborhood has been crushed (first came gentrification and next came supersification, my term inspired by the Bloomberg administration's tsunami of over the top community crushing development) with it you lost the community, the historic buildings which were so beautiful and many  had these "face facades" (photos on my blog) as opposed to mirrored facades so we lose the texture, the quirky oddities including people and small businesses to the ubiquitous NYU t-shirt and suits.  The people wearing NYU t shirts don't know about NYU tearing down St. Ann's and they don't know NYU's special real estate group wait like vultures for buildings to empty aka mass evictions to buy up or lease, tear down our historic New York to make it NYU-Las Vegas Ville.  (I thought I lived in the East Village, not a bad xerox of mid-town.  The street traffic both vehicular and pedestrian seems as crowded as midtown and in some ways the area is beginning to resemble Wall St. with "Dubai on the Bowery" next to a few token small buildings although I hear the goal is to remove all of them. So sad and yet funny  to be taking a break from NYC only to hear thick french accents discussing visiting the Lower East Side, the East Village and Bowery but they better hurry because it seems the goal is to make it Wall Street with a few token historic buildings and massive big sprawling dorms.   With the rise of just about everything comes more budget cuts which is another big red light that is not going to be addressed but to be endured with how many more causalities of all kinds?)

I just don't feel like painting anymore and painting takes a place to mess up and I need ventilation so my creativity comes out my pores (pours) other ways.   I am mourning it all.

I do want NYU to stop tearing down our historic buildings and most of all leave the Village East and West alone.  St. Ann's from 1847 survived everything but NYU's need and greed to build yet another mega dorm and ultimately where ever NYU buys property the neighborhood dies.  NYU doesn't need to abuse eminent domain to get the job done like Columbia University.

My mind returns to walking through the large rooms of the Met looking at photos of people, real people, odd, strange, the term some use is "freaks" and with great sadness, I think to myself, people will have to come visit a recreation of our neighborhoods in a museum or Las Vegas.  The people that made the area so desirable are no longer welcome -- the mirrored sky piercing windows have invisible "not welcome signs" as do the many fancy stores.  At least Starbucks feeds homeless people every day with left over food.   The sky piercing mirrored condos and glittery zone busting hotels reflect a history destroyed and a community no longer welcome.

I lived in a factory building that was converted for the last 20 years and every winter I froze.  It was so cold.  I had one heat source and I waited for the building to convert the old windows the leaked so much heat, allowed so much pollution including noise in and now my next stop feels like a hotel visit  possibly my last stop in New York City unless I make mega bucks so I can have a home in NYC and out in the country or get "married" to someone that changes my geography because relationships can do that but I do not see me living in my new home for another 20 years. I long more and more for quiet and peace but also for characters, unique funny wonderful characters always.

http://suzannahbtroy.blogspot.com/2008/02/st-marks-tongue-tongue-tongue.html

My heart just feels broken today , my throat has the 9-11 throat burn and I find myself returning to Diane Arbus. I found this article and I love how the author dismisses Norman Mailer's analogy and his own is sensitive and very smart because art is about "doors"...and about "locking and or unlocking" stories, emotions, etc.

Arbus Reconsidered by Arthur Lubow, Sept. 14, 2003 The NYTimes Magazine click the link to read the article by Lubow and I enjoyed reading his piece!

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D02E1DB173BF937A2575AC0A9659C8B63

Her critics put her down because they were so very jealous of her is my guess and now she is being embraced and I see her influence everywhere -- even more or as much as the ubiquitous  NYU students and Con Ed trucks (as infrastructure infrastructure infrastructure..,]  Her critics where probably not capable of empathy and I believe she had empathy and compassion.  Some photos I see by contemporary photographers have compassion but also fear -- fear of becoming the subjects they photograph but you can tell Arbus had a genuine feeling for her subjects and the proof is in how their images and the haunting impact of them still touch us...haunt us, move us to step closer or further away.

If that happens to me I will be glad to not be alive to endure it..."it" being acceptance...too little too late now too alien I am alienated.

p.s.  "She'd go to bars on the Bowery and to people's houses."  from the Arbus article

Richard Sandler, East Village photographer, film maker

www.tankboy.com/richard/

Go to Richard Sandler's site and check out his photographs he has posted from the  late 1970 and 1980's.   Towards the end of the short series are two subway photos that I just love.

As long as I have been around I have seen him around usually filming and he has been around longer than I have.

Gods of Time Square is one film that I saw that was ahead of the game talking about the NYC make over in to a big generic shopping mall...you can visit his site and learn more...

Angels, I saw some angels today on my walk

the villager not a "village" er anymore

The Villager really does not represent the Village "East and West"  but special interests including NYU...The Villager continues becoming "one" with the East Village's  very own Evil Empire NYU and just look at who they get to pat them on the back with a two page spread but  John Sexton who really could run our community board!  It seems like NYU runs the villager.  Take a good look at that page.  That fact that the villager (not anymore) would highlight a photo of John Sexton praising "The Villager" speaks volume along with many others highlighted with the exception of Clayton Patterson who was and is powerful documenting the neighborhood's struggle and gritty characters so much so I think he must have inspired the visual imagery of the film "Blade Runner"!

I am no longer taking a look at The Villager any more.  I stopped  for a while after they deleted me, the most dynamic speaker at the rally for Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen and if you want to figure out why again look to the photo spread of the villager's pic for people they get to pat them  on the back.  In cutting me out of the rally they also caught out Filomena Silvestri who had just died at 94 years old and she died knowing we fought for her and we won a small victory... an extension rather than having Whole Earth and Bakery thrown  out on the street.  I thanked the community for all their work and Filomena Silvestri died know, you the community fought for her and the villager deleted me because the reporter supposedly stated I didn't say anything different than anyone else. I was the only one who mentioned Filomena Silvestri and thanked the community, pointed out they made the difference.   Filomena created the business we where there rallying for and The Villager never mentioned her in the article.  I had to hound the editor to do an obit honoring her.  I also mentioned the community outreach resource centers in every mega dorm we should have here in the East Village to help the community and small business.

There is a photo of Mike Rosen that lives in the Christa Dora, http://www.thevillager.com/villager_119/onavebtryingto.html  here is the article from the villager about the Crista Dora and I have a link posted to The Villager about an article asking if the Christa Dora owes the community a community facility and how ironic because Mike Rosen co-owns a lot of buildings including The Red Square (looks like an NYU dorm) and there is a Lenin sculpture on it which he would never  put on the roof or deck duplex or triplex he owns in the Krista Dora and he is happy to not ask the community how they feel about the Lenin Sculpture meaning many do not like it.

If John Sexton becomes community board 3 chair let us ask Susan Stetzer if it is a conflicted of interest.   Yes there is a picture of Susan Stetzer as well.

The community board should be a democratic process and we need to know who these people are that represent our community and the community must know when the meetings are and that they are welcome to come, listen and to speak up.  There also has to be accountability like 311 meaning the community board must show they addressed the issues brought to them and or refer them and it must be listed.

There is a comment section here so feel free to comment.

I love Jefferson Siegel photos and Clayton Patterson's too.  There are some talented writers and I wish them the best of luck or making it in to  a regular gig in The New York Times although the times has disappointed me as well not even covering The Stuy Town affording housing rally and it should have been front page.

I am done with reading The Villager.   Could you imagine a free society where you weren't allowed to express dissenting opinions?  I think of Stepford Wives  adding in the sexist element of women should be seen and not heard unless they "agree" with the men in power that is.

East Village Memorial to Rescue workers 9-11

Jim Power's tribute to the rescue workers 9-11 (along with advertising at least one patron) has endured in it's spot by the black cube for now.  I remember when Jim had a particularly bad melt down and this young police officer from the 9th Precinct did an outstanding job calming him down rather than arresting him or sending him to BELLEVUE.   l because separating  him from Jesse Jane (his dog not the porn star....Jesse is like an emotional seeing eye dog.  She helps Jim to navigate being out there and he is out there.)  The 9th  Precinct exhibited great compassion with the East Village's famous artist who was homeless at the time (and has spent so much time homeless yet so productive making his mosaic art all over the East Village and even Woodstock) and by not getting arrested and moving forward he actually moved off the streets in to an apt.  East Village memories.  I had  a bad dream related to traumatic event not 9-11 more recent and I can't get back to sleep so I am blogging.   I remember a police Sgt. who exhibited integrity and courage when I had to go to the police about a very disturbing problem.    The "problem" was in my dream that woke up at 3 am this morning.

unusual stair case -Broadway and 11th Street

click  on the image to see it larger or visit in person....Broadway between 11th and 12th on the East Side....I am so tired...mentally and physically exhausted...so I can't even tell you what the store front is and so much changes block to block week to week with evictions, etc.

I think of some video footage of   Karl, "Santa" who is homeless which I taped on Easter and he tells the story of Christ being taken down from the cross and I can here his something of his own struggle in the story he tells that seems to be bubbling with some humor, sadness and goodness.  Karl was drunk, articulate and colorful in telling his Easter day interpretation of Jesus being taken down from the Cross.  I think Jesus would have a lot of compassion for Karl, a lot.

2 very big New York City dogs

fence locked Tompkin Square Park

The park has "problems" and I am guessing one technique is to lock the gate.  The sad part was an older man in a wheel chair had to go the long way around to go home.  All the most famous characters, many homeless shook and banged the gate yelling for police.
The 9th Precinct has done such a good job that long term community members  joke with sadness they long for a crime wave.  (As if crime might discourage this tsunami of community crushing development.)

There are big problems in the park but the very same problems will go on in the fancy mirrored condos....everything will be delivered to their doors and ditto for the dorms although over the years the different colleges that occupy/destroy the neighborhood have given the security guards the heads up so bringing heroin addicted sex workers up to the dorm room  is a little more difficult.  Ask any woman that lived here when that was a huge problem at the entrance to the NYU dorm on 12th Street and 3rd Avenue because many of us would be harassed by men cruising the street to pick up the small congregations of young women standing their waiting for clients.

German with Joe Torre.  He loved kids and Merlin's Miracles will be his foundation to continue touching peoples lives in the most optimistic way which was one of Merlin German's many gifts including his bravery.

I am very sad this morning and I think of being "burned" but it is nothing compared to suffering and enduring the burns Sgt. German endured.  I remember Mike Daly talking about Capt. Pat Brown visiting Capt. Drennan when he was badly burned but unlike Sgt. German he never was to leave the hospital where Pat visited him.  I remember all the flowers (I added flowers to the many placed there) outside the firehouse for Capt. Drennan and the the young men that took the express to Heaven and that was before 9-11.    This is the fire house on 6th Avenue just below Houston and it is the firehouse that also lost Firemen Bobby Beddia and Joseph Graffagino and it was years after the fact but also 9-11.  They are 9-11 heroes as well that should be included in the memorial.

To think of how Capt.  Pat Brown visited Capt. Drennan as Mike Daly told us all as we sat in St. Patricks Cathederal and to know how bravely he died downtown only to be erased all these years along with so many other forming the largest loss of rescue workers in our city and Nation's history.  Honoring this historical loss would not take away from the loss of anyone else's bravery that day and there were so many brave and loving souls acting selflessly but it is time to honor the largest loss of rescue workers at the WTC always and it should have been so all these years.  Mayor, time to honor them with their rank.

I continue to ask the Mayor to give the fire, police and ems the simple respect due which is their rank at the 9-11 memorial.

Also NYU wastes our time as they crush our community and they don't even need to abuse eminent domain to get the job done and I continue to ask for community outreach resource centers in every mega dorm and NYU student housing center.

I also want NYU to honor the heart breaking history that NYU either destroys or occupies and one of the most horrific fires in NYC that took the lives of hundreds of young women is the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory right by Washington Square Arch and I want NYU to put up a frieze on the building so large and striking that no one can pass by and not be moved and remain ignorant of the history that is now associated with 9-11.

My letter "Betrayal at Ground Zero" was published in The Wall St. Journal in 2005 and is more true today in even more ways but the link is broken so I will include a copy I hand typed on this blog.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day

silence.

I also feel really awful today and after watching something in the news that happened to a woman on Staten Island a couple of days ago that felt let us say "close to home" and NYU -- I feel like a Viet nam vet....I reposted a poem and picture on my other blog linked to this one through my profile and now I hope for techno-silence for the rest of the day to recover.

silence.

Suzannah B. Troy confronts mayor on the John Gambling show re: East Village mega dormed to death and this tsunami of community crushing development

reposting this yet again and you can find it on the comment section of my first post ever on this blog last year...

+You can hear me talk to the mayor on the John Gambling show that NYU has mega dormed the East Village to death! The link is below....

I met with Alicia Hurley maybe 2 years ago (or more) and to date NYU has done zero to give us community outreach resource centers and the first one I would like to see is in NYU's Student housing on Lafayette Street in the front window area and than in every mega dorm in the East Village and that includes other college campuses. These community outreach resource centers would support the community and small business and I explain how in other pieces I have written. I have a long list of ideas which I have submitted directly to NYU and also published on this blog so you can search in this blog's search engine or email me.

I also had a chat with the mayor, Mike Bloomberg and here is the link to listen in on what I had to say and yes I ask for the community outreach resource centers on the radio show...it is archived...enjoy listening to me and wait until your hear Mayor Mike's response!

+ go to link, Scroll down to Oct 19th ...
pick the top option for "archived link" which gives you the stream with out down load

NYU should "honor" the memory of the Triangle Shirt Factor Fire of 1911

I think of the city refusing to honor our firefighters, police and ems so finally the FDNY got a heartbreaking powerful frieze created on the side of the firehouse next to the WTC because to date the mayor still denies them their rank let alone acknowledging at the site the largest loss of rescue workers with in each dept, the largest loss of rescue workers in our city and nation's history so private money made it happen for the FDNY on the side of the firehouse next to the WTC site and we call this city the greatest city in the world and I thought so.

Since I have to get all upset and fight NYU all over again I continue to make demands they give us a community outreach resource center in every mega dorm and student housing center to help our communities and small businesses crushed by their occupation.

I have a long list of "suggestions" or demands.  Since Alicia Hurley mentions the word "honor"...

I want NYU to hire the artist that made the frieze downtown and make one to honor the young women that died jumping to their death in the horrifying tragic Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire and I have photos of the small plaques but I am so mentally and physically tired I can't get it together to find them and post them.

Students pass by and they have no idea of this horrifying tragedy now associated with 9-11 as one plaque states I think, it does....it is 4:08.  I must try to get some rest now.

+ I found two photos and posted one because the other is too blurry but I think it also mentions 9-11 along with this tragedy. Not sure....very very tired. May 4, 2008

email the president of NYU and Alicia Hurley and say "No!" to destroying the Provoincetown Playhouse in the West Village!

Dear Readers:  It is 3:53 am and I very upset...it all ties in to the horrible trauma I suffered and my move after 2o years so insomnia has hit me hard and that is why I am posting in the early hours and urging you to send an email to to NYU.   You can send one to the mayor but I think he wants to be president of NYU or will be made a trustee if he isn't an unofficial one already and ditto for Amanda Burden, mega millionaire socialite city planner.
