NYPD, please stop ticketing the tables in front of Cooper Science Building

Dear NYPD,  Please do not ticket the tables in front of Cooper Science Building which will be torn down soon.  I wish you could ticket those supersized "space ships posing as buildings", give them no parking tickets...look to the top left hand corner of this picture and you will see a small bit of a mirrored building that reflect a history destroyed and a community no longer welcome! (half empty condos on CU's property I think, you tell me, does Cooper Union own that property that was a parking lot before it became a mirrored supersized condos?)

If Cooper Union has it's way more supersized "space ship" like buildings that have nothing to do with our historic community will be dropped on this old infrastructure (yes, they lay down the new pipes in front of their property, yahoo, but in my artistic opinion, we seem to have a lot of water main breaks, gas leaks, sewage breaks, man hole covers exploding in the East Village as developers rush to supersize every piece of real estate they can here and city wide).

Cooper Union's  "new" supersized Science building that is coming soon -- their dream, the community's nightmare,  was given the  green light to supersize and  lease the building for 99 years! Feels criminal to me!  If only the NYPD could ticket Cooper Union, and all the architects that drop these hideous mega dorms, supersized condos, sky piercing hotels because they are supersizing our historic community.    These glittery sky piercing buildings supposedly representing "progress"  feels like invisible signs go with them "Community Not Welcome"  as gentrification becomes supersification!!!!

This table has superb books!   No to mega-retail.

Village still not nyu-ville

I had to make a call this afternoon as part of my transition and all I can tell you is the response on the phone reminded me of the deep love for my neighborhood for NYC for the people as much as the historic buildings, the trees and flowers that burst with beauty despite the concrete and crushing pollution both air and noise....

heart heart love heart thank you....exhale.
thanks to everyone who makes the neighborhood wonderful, magical, loving, a village, respectful and safe....thank you. Thanks for helping me.
Special thanks to for T and I hope the Yankee game doesn't get rained out and you have fun tonight!

email from Andrew Berman and I post these because preservation for me is about buildings, communities and small businesses

Dear friend,

I have two important items to share with you:
St. Vincent's Landmarks hearing: The Landmarks Preservation Commission's continued hearing on the Rudin and St. Vincent's luxury condo and hospital development plan will be Tuesday, April 15th at 9:30 am at NYU's Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Square South, on the 10th floor (you can arrive as early as 9 am to sign in; bring photo ID to enter). ANYONE who did not testify at the last hearing on Tuesday or have their testimony read for them can speak at this hearing. WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO TESTIFY if you have not already; if you have, please come to show support. IT'S CRITICAL THAT WE HAVE A STRONG TURNOUT AT THIS HEARING TO CONTINUE THE MOMENTUM FROM THIS TUESDAY'S HEARING.
As at the last hearing, testimony should be limited to 3 minutes and focus on the issue of the "appropriateness" of the proposed demolitions and new developments for this historic district. Bring 10 copies of your testimony to submit (or to leave if you cannot stay to testify). Go to www.gvshp.org/StVincentsLetter.htm for a form letter which can be used as sample testimony; please also go to www.gvshp.org/StVincentsLetter.htm to send a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission if you have not done so already.

See coverage of Tuesday's very well-attended landmarks hearing-- go to http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/01/hundreds-expected-to-testify-on-st-vincents-expansion/?hp and www.ny1news.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=8&aid=80010.

'Preservation Vision: NYC:' Join in this very important year-long initiative to engage those interested in preservation about their aspirations for New York City in the year 2030 and the actions needed to make those hopes a reality. As part of the first phase of the project, an on-line survey has been launched to gather feedback, ideas and opinions from New Yorkers interested in the future of historic preservation in the city -- go to www.preservationvision-nyc.org to learn more and take the survey (which closes April 15, so please respond soon!).

This project is the initiative of a group of New York City charitable funders with a long-standing interest in preservation and is managed by the non-profit organization, Minerva Partners. Preservation Vision is funded in part by generous gifts from The New York Community Trust, New York State Council on the Arts, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, The Gerry Charitable Trust, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, The 42nd Street Fund and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! Questions regarding Preservation Vision: NYC can be sent to Kirstin Sechler at ksechler@minervapartners.org.
Sincerely,

Andrew Berman

Christa Dora -- does the building owe the community a community space?

As usual I wrestle with technology and I can't get the image rotated so go to this article and you can read about this building...the neighborhood's first symbol of gentrification and see a proper photo.

A community member asked me if the building was suppose to honor some agreement to have a space for the community because of the buildings original use.

One of the first posting ever on my blog is the stunning historic NYPD building which is now condos and they building did in fact honor it's community facility agreement.  I show cased this because the building is across from a massive NYU Student housing building with a mirrored store front that could also be community outreach resource center.

If anyone know anything please post on my blog, thank you.

http://www.thevillager.com/villager_119/onavebtryingto.html

Here is an excerpt from the article:
Built in 1928 as a settlement house, Christodora House provided food, shelter, education and health services to low-income immigrants in New York City at that time. The building housed a music school and theater, as well as the gym and swimming pool. Various accounts report that George Gershwin gave his first public performance in the building.

http://suzannahbtroy.blogspot.com/2007/12/north-side-of-stunning-historic-police.html
Here is one of my first posts and it was to again bring home the point NYU owes the community community outreach resource centers...they owe us as much as they can give and even more considering how they have mega dormed the East Village to death and if they used the term community facility than honor us and give us community facilities rather than exclude the community. We need the supermarket on 2nd Avenue and we need NYU to make homes for other small businesses the community relies on that can be replaced by mega retail.

Secrets Can Be Murder by Jane Velez-Mitchell, my book review from Amazon.com

Secrets Can Be Murder: What America's Most Sensational Crimes Tell Us About Ourselves
by Jane Velez-Mitchell
This is my book review which you can find on www.amazon.com under my name Suzannah B. Troy

Let us hope "Secrets" can bring national change for the better, October 8, 2007
This book and some details are just too much for me to absorb like "modern day movies" with too much gruesome detail but Jane Velez-Mitchell is just reporting the truth rather than providing mega-bucks hollywood slock aka "entertainment". This book is crucial to be read and for our law makers to make changes nationwide to better protect women from abuse and murder. What is clear are these murderers where giving off plenty of signals or even had criminal records that were neon signs. I hope her book brings change to people's awareness, safety and the "the system" which does not protect the victims. Velez-Mitchell points out that "economic abuse" plays a role in the abuse of women and it can be found at all socio-economic levels. Her point about the how women can be the harshest judges of fellow women blaming them for their own rapes and murders is right on. "Why was she out so late?" "What was she wearing?". I hope this book raises awareness and brings national changes in our legal system, in protecting women and children and state of the art technological warning systems to alert communities of the movements of repeat offenders that our on the outside and we need to ask ourselves how and why the legal system continues to set free people that are so violent. Why is so much hostility and rage towards women accepted in this culture. Read this book and find out Velez-Mithcell's answers and the sad truths about why so many women stay home in what I call "good girl prison" but as she points out men do not stay home because they are not afraid of being harmed. Read this book and I hope Jane Velez-Mitchell "Secrets can be Murder" helps to bring change and prevent unacceptable hostility and rage towards women that is very much accepted in America to successful reforms to protect the innocent and successfully prosecute the guilty. Jane Velez-Mitchell ends on a spiritual uplifting note and she has a list of important resources and she urges readers to get involved! Read this book!

Tina Negron's poem/Violence towards women in it's many forms in the public forum aka the streets, lobbies, workplace of NYC

I read an article on the capture of Tina Negron's murderer and in the article words that I had written about violence towards women, the words were like the words I had written on this blog almost quoted verbatim it seemed to me.

I was glad because I have lived it and endured it but I am alive. It was not any ex-boyfriends. My theory is what I was forced to endure was an attempt to silence me. Not the ultimate silencer which is death because here I am alive writing to you.

I was glad to read words I had written as if someone had read them directly from my writing here on this blog. The message has to get out. I read Tina Negron's poem and she was right on.

Tina Negron's poem

“I see souls being lost because young brothers and sisters don’t know how to act,”
“I see the whole world coming to an end. I see me dying, but me fighting, on what’s on my mind, is trying to be, and that is really a message to you.”

I had contacted as many people as possible about violence towards women and the need for change including writing a book review on Amazon.com for "Secrets Can Be Murder" by Jane Velez-Mitchell and I contacted her directly and emailed Commissioner Kelly. I went to the 9th Precinct's community meeting and spoke up about the fact that nobody should die the way Imette St. Guillen died. The commander of my precinct was respectful and he inspired me to write up ideas which I handed in and I felt the precinct community meeting was the only meeting where I was heard. When every where else I was shut down because they feared I wanted their jobs -- that I want to run for political office -- that I am too effective so they shut me down. I wrote many people and also starting emailing Nancy Grace who has an amazing resource list on her website. I also emailed Americas Most Wanted on several issues and thanked them for their fine work that lead to the capture of Tina Negron's murderer.

But through this blog it is clear my words are being read, even repeated although I am not credited and better my thoughts are repeated. I lived it and it was not any ex-boyfriends but it was clear to me there was an attempt to control me and most of all silence me --- very painful topic, very traumatic and it is close to home for me even though I am moving, close to home.

+Also note I will not mention the paper where I read this because they were part of the "silencers" fearful I was to effective reaching the community and erased me -- my speech which people still praise me for at the Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen" rally where I praised the community -- I told them Filomena Silvestri died at 94 knowing we fought for her and we won a small victory -- an extension and she died knowing her business was not going to be thrown out on the street evicted! You made the difference and that is was makes us a Village and not NYU-ville!!!!! I demanded community outreach resource centers in every mega dorm here in the East Village with scholarships, with computers for people in need, with a table to ask for tutors, with listings of our small businesses but the little newspaper reporter told his editor this --I did not say ANYTHING DIFFERENT THAN ANYONE ELSE! I WAS THE MOST DYNAMIC SPEAKER AT THAT RALLY AND THEY ERASED ME AND FILMONENA, SHE WAS NEVER MENTIONED IN THIS LITTLE NEWSPAPER'S REPORTING ALTHOUGH IT WAS HER BUSINESS AND THAT WAS BECAUSE I WAS THE ONLY ONE TO MENTION HERE AND THEY WANTED NO MENTION OF ME SO WE WERE BOTH ERASED. I confronted the editor and he sent me this.... She did not say anything different from anyone else but in fact I did. The little paper did an obit for Filomena "Vegan Earth Mom" that was because of me hounding the editor and the words "Vegan Earth Mom" were my words that I said use with my blessing. Filomena was a woman visionary, a woman business owner who should have been honored at the rally and she was by me and the loud response when I mentioned her but they wanted my voice silenced so they did not mention me although I spoke powerfully and they did not mention her because I was the only one who spoke of. The reporter I am told said to his editor, Who does she think she? Is she running for political office? The little paper much later ran a piece and included me with the mayor and picked the most unattractive picture of me on purpose but still people know the truth. Other blogs picked up the story. Thank goodness for blogs.

I am not running for political office but I know I make a difference helping people and I didn't need a job in city government to do so. I do want the community boards to have to document each person speaking up and return with this:

1) yes I addressed it - problem solved.
2) No, we did not resolve the issue at the community board level and it was submitted to 311 -- here is the number meaning WE NEED ACCOUNTABILITY. WE NEED TO KNOW WHO REPRESENTS US ON A COMMUNITY BOARD LEVEL because we were not even given the right to VOTE for them!

My theory is the attempt to silence me, shut me up, shut me down was in part sexism -- "She should know her place and they wanted to put me in my place. It happens all the time -- this sexist mentality -- women should know their place and they should shut up and if they refuse they have to deal with a hostile evironment and I am so glad at least one one sued and won big. We should not have to endure hostile environements and be trashed because we dare to speak up. We should be intimidated in our homes, in our workplaces -- we should not be silenced -- we should not be murdered.

It happens all the time and it is not just male on female but it seems mostly so.

I felt I was affective and there was this undercurrent that became no longer "under" with the intent to shut me up. My theory is the attempts to silence me is because I am outspoken and I speak up on many issues including against the number one real estate magnate in this city which is NYU and NYU has a lot of powerful connections and people that want to be close to them, depend on them. I had one NYU employee ask me to stop talking to the press and this person is now gone. I watched NYU build one mega dorm after another from my window and The New School mega dorm all from my window. St. Ann's was the final traumatic tear down I witnessed and NYU is no longer going to be my next door neighbor. I will no longer be situated between NYU and the USPS -- the building on the other side of my home for 20 years.

I have this blog so I can write and writing is part of my art.

Yes, I agree Silence=Violence and their are all kinds of way people attempt to silence women who dare to speak up.
Anyone celebrating attempts at silencing us or the ultimate silence is someone --- take a good look at them...Why are they so happy to silence a powerful voice? Why so compelled to silence us? It seems to me like more women endure bouts of verbal harassment, threats, intimidation, being blamed by the abusers, and ultimately murdered by their abuser -- more die "death by murder" than by death by breast cancer.

post traumatic stressing

4:54 am -- getting closer to "closing time" and the final move -- closure -- the place that was my home for 20 years in the East Village...I can't tell you details but something has stirred me up -- I am post traumatic stressing at this early hour.  I feel all kinds of emotions and I have so much to say as usual but this time I am not for "reasons".

closing time
I am far from  alone
 "closing time"
as so many people make the exodus -- by choice or not by choice...
under duress like I suffered or  even far worse.
closing time

My move had nothing to do with foreclosure and it is sad because I listened to one American, a Dad, older than me with a teenager and the house is gone.  Yes, I now have lawyers.   I am still learning the law.  I have to call the precinct and ask them the law.  I am still learning what falls with in criminal law and what falls with in civil....the law seems vast and it seems to me criminals, lawyers and the police are the only people that seem to know it.  Everyone I talk to does believe in karma... justice will be served...everyone I talk to really believes justice is served but we do not get to witness it and it doesn't necessarily happen in a time frame that is speedy but it does happen.  I am not one of those people that jumps up with joy when  I do get the telephone calls, by the way, you weren't the only one, this time around.....   More than once I have witnessed what everyone seems to agree.... karma does in fact circle.

My favorite American Indian store is Common Ground but another store was preparing for closing time just like me so I bought some magical pieces from them from 3 different tribes.  Two have "bear" themes and one bear I am giving to a friend that mystically appeared in my life and makes me happy.  I am giving him the bear  to express my gratitude.    Peace and happiness are the priority.  The stress and upset really took it's toll on me and I was doing a national press circuit on tv with my yoga teacher for her book.  The last one for me was Rachel Ray and they only showed me for a mili-sec but my inner beauty switch was one.  My face right now looks like that Sharpee the wrinkle dogs but I don't care.   I know better than to compare myself with actresses and models that have been "airbrushed" or have the big bucks to make themselves younger using high tech options although it would be delightful to do so if I had the big bucks.  I think of the American Indian imagery of the animals and their meanings...I got an inexpensive watch at the store with bear paw prints  and the sun framing them.  In one interpretation the bear means healing but there are many.  I love my new watch but I also know not to hold unto it....it is all temporary.

I keep wondering if it is time to really leave NYC or just take a break.  For now I am here to stay but taking a break, closing time is near.  I find myself post traumatic stressing and upset.  So many of my neighbors have left.  Now me.   I wish I had left sooner, left when they left...  Many Americans are leaving their homes because they don't have a choice and that is heartbreaking.  I also really feel badly for all the families with their loved ones away from home because of the war or worse that are never coming home.

My zodiac sign is "cancer" so my friends say it makes sense I would feel the way I do because cancerians  are homebodies.  I adopted these 2 cats and where ever they are is my home for now.
I want to stay in NYC.  I want to leave NYC.  I love NYC.

Balthazar in the early hours

I like to go to Balthazar as soon as they open and grab a cup of Joe and read the papers at least once a week.  I pretend I am in Paris but it is better because I am in New York City.
For a full breakfast and East Village long term upbeat funkiness I go to Cafe Orlin on St. Marks Place and than I pretend I am still living in the East Village and not NYU-ville or NYU-Las Vegas-ville.  Cafe Orlin opens at 9:00 am and by that time my day may be half over.

Roosevelt Park what feels like a bazillion years ago, circa 21 years I did the lowest of the low work on movies and films (big difference as far as I am concerned between a movie and a film) and me and usually at least one guy would stay over night in a van and not let people park so the film crew could pull in.   On this little street between the park and what is now the Howard Johnson's 20 plus years ago I remember being surprised to see big trucks pull up and transvestites climb in...and this went on all night.  Times have changed.

Profile view of the new 9th Precinct, the front facade is the "old facade"

The front of the 9th Precinct is a recreation of the old facade although for me, it lost something in the "make-over".  From the side, the building reminds me of California, not NYC.  You can see a mega build further down the street that looks like a space ship landed -- part of this new hideous New York.  At least the police building attempts to fit in with the neighborhood and takes pride in "old" New York.   I call the 9th Precinct that 9 and half precinct -- just my humorous attempt to say the population of the area the 9th is responsible for has in theory been massively expanded thanks to this tsunami of mega dorms, mega mirrored condos and sky piercing hotels so I jokingly say we need a BIGGER precinct with even more police officers.

I think of Blade Runner and the collage of languages in the film.  In this neighborhood you can hear dialects of "American"(the British tease me I speak American but I am not sure what my first language is), Spanish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Taiwanese, Yiddish, Hebrew, Nepalese, Tibetan, Japanese, Korean,Polish, Russian, Arabic, Indian, Pakistan, Myanmarese (?)(instead of saying Burmese), and  American Indian just to name a few.

The 9th Precinct, I think is the only precinct in NYC that has a mega dose of mega dorms with a huge temporary population dominated by NYU plus NY Law, The New School, SVA, and Cooper Union that comes here to live for "x" amount of time from age 18 on up that may not be used to all that NYC has "to offer". (This mega dose of mega amounts of young people is a "constant" in terms of overwhelmingly/ highly populating the housing/community with what feels like the eternal fountain of youth each year being replaced with the next batch of new 18 years old-- a temporary large population in flux, dominating the area that remains eternally 18 years old and new to the area struggling to remain the East Village and not NYU-Las Vegas-ville.)  These universities have their "own police" as well which is weird especially NYU because of their massive population and occupation of our neighborhood and the surrounding areas from Stuy Town, Chelsea, West Village down to South St. Seaport and yes they have campus space mid-town too.  The bottom line is the 9th Precinct may be the only precinct in NYC to have the most massive amount of student housing -- mega dorms and various other official and unofficial student housing by at least 5 campuses and NYU happens to be the no. 1 real estate magnate and not for profit to boot.

With the "new economy" of mega wealth that moves in to the East Village, a lot of problems you might see in Tompkins Square Park may exist but on "higher levels" that don't require park benches.      Will there be more complicated techno-crimes with the old style "Boesky shuffle" that was so complicated it was almost impossible to prosecute him but Ivan Boesky was busted and he did serve some time.   I am sure "new technology + new wave of wealth" may bring "new style crime" to our  East Village, NYU-ville, "new New York",  something complicated hard to detect I call "Boesky like crime" to our neighborhood, not the kind you find in Tompkins Square Park.   The mega builds in our humble neighborhood also resemble Wall Street so I imagine more slick "street crime" you find downtown or on the upper East Side will come to our East Village neighborhood.   How ironic, the NYPD needs a raise, especially their starting salary big time but the NYPD may need to get business and techno-degrees and speak at least 2 or 3 languages to really be state of the art.  The NYPD made need to create a 'new economy techno-street crime division" and I am not talking concrete street and geographically technology makes location unimportant but sky piercing mirrored condos would be great places to set up shop.

In theory understanding terror attacks despite  their primitive ways requires understanding global politics and global economies because one of their objectives besides mass murder was to hurt our economy.  For some reason post 9-11 there just seems to be more mega wealth here in the city and the East Village than ever before.  Ultimately it changed our demographics pushing out even more middle class and poor.

How will policing change in this "new New York"?  Will the 9th Precinct have to move out for a "new" new renovation or move to a much bigger building as the neighborhood "grows" to resembles a bad xerox of mid-town,  Time Square and Wall Street more and more?

p.s. The answer for now is a downsizing of the police as the population and city continues to go through these transformations I call the "new hideous New York" being  built on old New York's infrastructure because of city's budget cuts.  I also fear more infrastructure breaks that resemble terror attacks are in our future and is another big concern for the safety of people living, working and visiting here.

"metal kisses" of all kinds in NYC

I saw these metal vehicular kisses on the street in Soho and the East Village.   The only bummer is the bicycles.  It is great that we have so many more bike racks but the bummer is the streets become cluttered.  I know I am really athletic and can get around but I have tears in my knee that 2 surgeries could not repair and sometimes I find myself wobbling and if it wasn't for this one knee specialist and a lot of 'core work',  I think I would be using a cane.  I just do not want a metal kiss from a bicycle on the sidewalk.    I love bicycles big time as you know if you read this blog (Hub Station and Bicycle Habitat are two favorites bicycle havens.)  The streets and sidewalks of the city are jammed packed with more pedestrian traffic, more "everything traffic" and metal kisses of all kinds.

Time Capsule, La Guardia Place and Houston

The Parks Dept. trimmed this "Time Landscape" down big time but it was meant to give you a feel of what Manhattan was like when it filled with trees.  On scathing hot summers I would lean against the fence and the trees felt like they were providing natural air conditioning.

Whole Foods,Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen continues to fight EVICTION and I wish Whole Foods would move Whole Earth to their front windows on Houston

Go to my blog search engine and type in Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen and read about their struggle.  I wish Whole Foods like a massive rescue ship would take in this gem that needs to continue on and not sink...I keep thinking of the Titantic as an analogy to the massive losses -- renaming gentrification "supersification".

By moving Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen to the front windows of Whole Foods, Whole Foods would being honoring and helping to preserve a small business which are under threat and a part of why the city is losing it's dynamism.

Instead of being the same generic mega mall which they have on 14th Street and just about everywhere, Whole Foods would be creating a new wave of mega retail that is honoring small businesses especially one that was a head of it's time in terms of honoring Mother Earth and our community.   The community loves Peter and his Mom may she rest in Peace!  She died knowing we fought for her and her business which already fell victim to gentrification once was not evicted.

I think Amy Zimmer's piece really helped big time and the enormous amount of community outrage that manifested in thousands upon thousands of signatures to save this vegan bakery and kitchen.
