"Detectives had failed to see a pattern, even though all were raped, most were suffocated, and TVs and radios were missing from most of the victims' rooms.
How could that be? There were a couple of explanations.
Many cops were angry that Commissioner Patrick Murphy had taken murder investigations away from precinct-based detective squads and created specialized homicide units that covered larger zones of the city. The reorganization bred a “lack of interest” among investigators, as one cop put it. So they short-shrifted murders.

The victim was Pauline Spanierman, 69, the widow of a prominent Manhattan art dealer. She too had been strangled and raped, and her TV was gone. Spanierman lived not at the seedy Park Plaza but in a posh building a few steps away, at 40 W. 77th St.
That murder got the attention of NYPD brass. Soon, the neighborhood was swarming with detectives."

I called the detective squad and detectives would say we don't have Vergona and Chen 'a badge number. I did not know Delita Hooks detectives because they never contacted me.
