A city cop claims she was repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse and harassmentby a 300-pound sergeant who called her his “work p----.”
Officer Ann Cardenas, 29, alleges Sgt. David John groped her and grinded against her body while making grunting sounds. She also accused John, 41, assigned to the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick, Brooklyn, of showing her photos of his p_e_n_i_s and making explicit comments about wanting to have sex with her.
“This is the worst example of sexual harassment that I have seen in all my years practicing law,” Cardenas’ lawyer Linda Cronin told the Daily News. “There was a frathouse culture in the precinct that was beyond the pale.”
The Brooklyn district attorney’s office and the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating. Cardenas, on the force six years, also filed discrimination claims with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the state Human Rights Division.
John, a 20-year NYPD veteran, has filed for retirement, but his voluntary departure is on hold. He was placed on modified assignment Feb. 26, a police spokesman said.
The sergeant didn’t respond to a request for comment, but a lawyer for the Sergeants Benevolent Association said there are plenty of holes in the accuser’s story. “Sgt. John is aware of the allegations and is in possession of compelling evidence confirming that Officer Cardenas is notbeing entirely truthful,” Andrew Quinn said. “We will produce that evidence at the appropriate time and to the appropriate authorities.”
The DA’s office and the NYPD declined to comment on the probe.
The federal discrimination complaint filed in January spells out the bombshell claims.
“In the summer of 2013 while I was in the precinct sitting on the couch in the conditions unit room, Sgt. John grabbed me, threw me down and held me down while trying to kiss me,” the EEOC complaint said. “He then climbed on top of me and would not let me up.”
The harassment allegedly went on for more than a year. “He also showed me pictures of his p_e_n_i_s and asked, ‘Is this big? It’s bigger than your boyfriend’s.’ This was done in front of the other officers,” Cardenas said in the complaint. “Sgt. John often pulls his pants down in front of me. He often sleeps in the office with his belt undone, and then will pull his pants down, grab his groin and say, ‘Ann, hold this for me,’ and will do this in front of other officers.”
Cronin said Cardenas has received good work evaluations.
“Many have looked the other way as if they didn’t know about the discrimination and harassment,” Cardenas states in the complaint, noting that a lieutenant did warn John to knock it off.
