BAM South should not be approved under these conditions
Here is an important call you may want to make to City Council Member Letitia James and the City council before their vote on Monday.
Councilwoman Letitia James, one of the most vocal opponents of the sell off of Pacific Library, has expressed deep reservations about the BAM South project because library officials want to pay for a cultural condominium library associated accross the street from BAM by selling off the historic Pacific Street Branch. Tish is now under pressure from those wanting to sell off another library in a real estate shell game. She is receiving daily phone calls from developer lobbiests, BPL trustees and the highly paid library strategy group. Tish was also slammed by the pro-developer Daily News and Crain's Business.
We can fight back! You can call Tish James office tomorrow 718-260-9191 and 212-788-7081 and email ljames@council.nyc.gov and let her staff know we are counting on her leadership to protect Pacific Library. Approving the BAM South project is putting the Pacific Branch in significant jeopardy of sale and demolition. CDL would not be against BAM South if the Pacific Library were not being sold off and if the public received the real value for the land Walentas got for BAM South. The developer got a rock bottom price for the land in a bid to build a "parking lot". Instead, he now gets to build a 300 apartment 32 story building almost as tall as the Williamsburg Savings Bank with all sorts of cultural space. So we the public, got short changed, by maybe $50 million or more that isn't being paid back in public benefit. Remember that when the city says we can't afford to fix the AC at the Brooklyn Heights Library.
"hello my name is ......... I am from.......land I want to leave the following message for Tish, I want her to know that we want her to stand firm in protecting the Pacific Library from being sold off and we are outraged at the rock bottom price the public received for the BAM South property. We know the Girl Scout troop uses the Pacific branch as well as numerous other neighborhood groups. The kids and residents who use it do not want it moved across the dangerous intersection into a "cultural condimimum". I admire your courage and want you to continue to be the beacon of hope for all of us. If we can't protect our public libraries from sell off and shrinkage the we can't protect anything. Thank you.
Everyone can call their own city council member to let them know BAM South should not be approved under these conditions. Councilman Stephen Levin -slevin@council.nyc.gov.
