Bob Cohen WW2 Vet Visits Churchill Exhibit!
Bob Cohen one of my WW2 Veterna heroes went to the Morgan Library to see the Churchill exhibit and he had unique insights. (Note: Bob is my hero. I approached him at The Strand Bookstore because of his World War 2 hat and asked him to come to my protests and he did! I love this man. He has had heart surgery and knee surgery and still came to my protests 2 years ago so that would be age 86!
Bob's comments, thoughts and insights including Churchill wanted to have the US Troops invade Berlin are unique and if I share them I would prefer video in his words.
As you know I suffer from extreme exhaustion, can't spell and I feel like I speak another language so I decided to turn on the computer and trying to type what he told me next.....
Bob was with the 83rd St Infantry......
He trained as infantry man in Texas -- age 19 went over seas to North Africa --- Oran ---
and he went on a train the box cars ones from WW1 to carry troops 40 or 8, 40 men or 8 horses....
6 days in the box car
to Tunisia to Bizerte --
landing craft -- Paestum, Italy --- South of Naples.....South of Salerno....
800 American soldiers -- first replacements following the invasion....a week after the invasion...
3 infantry divisions in action -- 3rd Infantry (Audi Murphy was in the 3rd Infantry -- he was very decorated --- the perfect infantry man) , 36th and 45th infantry....
Some how Bob -- part of 12 men ended up in amphibious assault unit -- named 1st Engineer Special Brigade....He was machine gunist..
When Bob joined up them they were preparing to invade Normandy.
Bob had to go get dinner so I got as far as Normandy.
