Sad news East Village bad air quality, heat wave and homelessness
I saw Marlene. The man she calls "her husband" although Marlene has many male connections and in terms of homelessness and the area she is one of the few women in a field male dominated but she and "husband" were sound a sleep on a large sheet spread out on the side walk on 2nd Avenue. Her hand was touching his wrist.
He has a full grown son that Marlene introduced me to in Tompkins one day. Very, very sad to see...and there are no easy solutions.
Just glad the racist misogynist photographer -- he is obese, old and dies his hair and beard black as well as white is not out but in his rent control apt so he can't photograph her. I had talked to the NYPD, people involved with the homeless as well as many New Yorkers who were deeply repulsed by him photographing her topless when she was drunk out of her mind. She clearly needs help. On good days she would tell me she needed rehab and she had shelter but those days are gone. She just seems angrier and in far worse shape.
It seems also sad and wrong that homelessness, mental illness, alcohol and other substance abuse become the problem of the NYPD. You can't violate people's rights and force them to get care unless they do something so wrong they end up in jail.
It is sad but some people say that jail would be better than out on the street being exploited in many ways including sexually as well as sicko stalkers with cameras treating the homeless like Britney Spears.
Only a sicko like that airhead or idiot at that local rag Lincoln Anderson defends the blob taking photos of a poverty level, African American woman who appears ill and addicted to alcohol. Sick stuff.
The heat wave is awful. NYC keeps sending out air adversaries but it has to worse for people with illness and if they have homes they can stay in doors and most awful for homeless people that refuse shelter, rehab and care.
