David Durk, NYPD
I am half way through the book on David Durk by James Lardner "Crusader, The Hell Raising Police Career of Detective David Durk" and I can't express in words what I feel for him and for Serpico....
This book has so completely captured me and moved me. I wrote a review from the half way point and put it on Amazon. It was also amazing that David and Serpico did each encounter a boss courageous and honest, they actually wanted to work with them out on the street and one involving a stunningly beautiful NYPD woman officer which leads to the capture of a big Mafioso....I tell you about this on amazon... There is not a dull moment in this book but lots of heart breaking moments.....I so understand David Durk....even in his personal life...so many choices he could have made that would have been the easy ones that would have meant in easy life....not David's way. I will never forget this book, can't wait to finish reading it, I don't want to finish reading it.
A father loves his son so much he approaches David to reveal to him a massive drug operation because his son is not following his gifts, his abilities but a drug dealer in to a life of crime.
The courage of this amazing older man, the love for his son is so moving and of course this information would greatly help the community as well...
long complicated story and the back drop is NYC politics.... fascinating....
ps In the film Serpico, David Durk's role is minimized in a ridiculous way only Hollywood is capable of.
James Lardner: "David gradually came to understand that he was persona non grata" with the entire administration of Mayor Edward I. Koch. Mr. Durk decided to take his pension, less than $17,000 a year after 22 years of work."
For me right now, I am stunned by what feels like terrible corruption in NYC politics and the people of New York seem to have a very high threshold for corruption in politics, taller than the skycrapers of NYC.
See my piece on city council...
