The symbol of gentrification in the East Village is the Christa Dora, once a welfare building and to date has never honored what many in the community believe is owed and that is a community facility.
The Red Square which looks like the blue print for NYU mega dorms has a Lenin statue that people believe is a rich man's toy, a wealthy developer Mike Red Square Rosen, mocking the community although he is on record stating Lenin is waving at Wall Street, the community believes this needs to come down and Mike Red Square Rosen can move Lenin to his luxury penthouse a top what was a welfare building, although in theory -- Lenin lovers would not approve of either location.
Readers make sure you don't call Mike Red Square Rosen a developer or a landlord, The Villager and he refer to himself as an activist, making him the only developer in NYC to be called an activist at least by the local rag which also highlighted John Sexton praising the rag (sellout but not in distribution) on their anniversary celebration.
John Sexton, President of NYU, is loathed by the East Village as are all rich developers that have crushed our community but please note NYU makes many generous donations and pays hired hands to tell the world how saintly and good blah blah blah.... Oh yeah, NYU, I think makes donations to the Greenwich Village Society for Preservation even though NYU tears down our historic neighborhood, East and West, ditto for the rich, including other real estate magnates other than NYU and Cooper Union, developers that decided all of the sudden they some how didn't destroy the history, vibe and feel of what was the Lower East Side, ho hum , it is just politics but some how it makes me think Mike Bloomberg is a warm cuddly guy, who at least doesn't ask people to call him an activist!
Mike Bloomberg's administration destroyed what was left of the East Village, Lower East Side and Bowery and Mike Bloomberg does give mega millions to charity, helps people and is a generous guy, so does that erase the fact his administration destroyed communities city wide with a tsunami of community crushing development that displaced so many including long term community members and small businesses?
No, so although mini-Mikes make me like Mike Bloomberg -- almost, the bottom line is vote Mike Bloomberg out of office and I don't have to tell you don't be fooled by mini-Mike wannabes because you already know that...you are not buying "it".
We need community outreach resource centers in every mega dorm in the East Village, in every student housing that once was the communities housing so students know the community and small businesses are struggling and get involved in helping. NYU and every mega dorm including NY Law, The New School, Cooper Union and even SVA ( a small mega dorm but still out of scale and soulless) used the term community facility to supersize and exclude the community from what I am told. Sure feels like higher education's no. 1 priority is real estate greed and exploitation of the neighborhoods they occupy and that not only does higher ed not understand the meaning of the word "NO!" and it sure feels like they use their not for profit status as a tax shelter.
Have I asked NYU directly in a meeting years ago with Alicia Hurley and gang? Yes.
Did I tell mayor Mike Bloomberg on the John Gambling show which is documented and on city gov website. Yes!
Did I state this at a rally for Whole Earth Bakery & Kitchen in Tompkins Square Park but the corrupt rag aka The Villager (not, a kiss /// paper for rich developers including NYU and the people that want to run this community and are hoping the community is not paying attention. )
Yes I did but the villager erased me so lucky I am archived on city gov website so when local politicos try and take credit for my idea and erase me yet again I have proof.
I want a commuinity outreach resource center in the building on Lafayette Street that once was Tower Video in the store front. I want free computers, a table to ask for volunteers, a place for seniors to sit other than McDonalds, more free scholarships for our young people, tutoring and mentoring....
The Red Square, not a dorm and not in scale or having anything to do with the Lower East Side looks like it was the prototype for the hideous ugly mega dorms that have destroyed the East Village/Lower East Side, and the NY Law dorm on East 3rd Street even has balconies like Red Square!
