Former Chief of Department Louis Anemone objects to Retired Cop Mike Bosak's comments in Saturday's newsletter re his integrity and being called "Screwy Louie.”
As most cops know, what almost everybody universally called Louis Anemone and still calls him behind his back is “Screwy Louie.” [I'm sure he knows that; he’s definitely not stupid.] I also stand on my comment re his integrity at the M.T.A. when he was the M.T.A.’s ‘Chief of Police.’
He sued the M.T.A. after being fired and lost his legal battle in court.
At his request, I'm including his rebuttal to my comments and the original Journal News article I had added those comments to.
With that said, I will say that Chief of Department Louis Anemone a/k/a “Screwy Louie” had to be one of the best Chief of Departments that the NYPD has ever had. And I do believe he is an honest and sincere man.
He just made one really stupid rookie mistake at the M.T.A.
You can’t manufacture a claim that the management at the MTA is corrupt and not present even one single iota of evidence to prove that it is corrupt. Was he being dishonest? I believe so.
And when you climb that high up, you're only entitled to one faux pas. - Mike Bosak
Re: "SCREWY LOUIE"
AN OPEN LETTER TO MIKE BOSAK
I read your editorial comments in the clippings about the Rockland County consulting assignment I recently completed, and felt that I must reply.
I don’t think I have ever met you, Mike, or if I did, you made little or no impression on me. I do however, enjoy reading the clippings that you assemble.
Now as to your characterization of me as “Screwy Louie”, which I think is unkind and inaccurate. Please let me know which of the following incidents was the basis of your claim.
Was it my arrests of two out of town heroin dealers in 1971 with over 10,000 decks of heroin?
Was it in 1977 when I came in from home during the Blackout and spent the next three days and nights on patrol in the 32nd Precinct?
Was it 1981 when I went toe to toe with the Chief of Patrol at Bellevue Hospital to protect an officer who was still in shock after a fatal police shooting?
Was it later in 1981 when I performed a water rescue in the East River?
Was it 1984 when I was shot (friendly fire) during the execution of a search warrant?
Was it 1985 when I publicly shamed a crack dealing scoundrel by walking him to the 20 Precinct?
Was it my leadership of the 32 Precinct, where for 3 years during the height of the “crack” wars, my officers didn’t fire a single shot at a human?
Was I screwy when I led the officers who ended the Crown Heights riots in 1992 after three days and nights of rioting?
Was it when I ordered the high rise rescue plan to be implemented at the WTC during our rescue efforts at the 1993 bombing?
Was it my leadership of the Disorder Control Unit, that created and revised training, policies and protocols during 1993?
Was it my patrolling in uniform in a highly visible radio car while Chief of Patrol and Chief of Department?
Was it my response to every major incident and officer fatality 24/7 during those same years?
Was it my leadership during Compstat implementation in 1994?
Was it my genuine concern for the safety of both the public and police?
I believe you owe me an answer.
Lou Anemone, Chief of Department, NYPD, retired.
P.S. My firing by the corrupt MTA, is my “badge of honor”. [Emphasis and highlighting added.]
