Fracking Write Andrew Cuomo
Dear Friend,
A quick update on what's happened since yesterday afternoon:
Just a few hours after denying the New York Time's report as "baseless speculation," Gov. Cuomo's Department of Environmental Conservation released their recommendations, which confirmed the Times reporting and called for 85% of New York State to be open to fracking. The DEC is formally issuing those recommendations today, as New York's fracking ban expires.
There's been a giant outcry in New York — more than 13,000 signatures on our petition to Governor Cuomo since yesterday afternoon. He is no doubt banking on this story quieting down over the holiday weekend. Let's not let that happen.
Right now, we need to raise massive pressure on the Governor to reject these recommendations and preserve New York's state-wide fracking ban. Read more below, and please sign the petition to Governor Cuomo. Then share widely with your fellow New Yorkers.

Dear Friend,
Yesterday, The New York Times reported that Governor Cuomo would be ending New York State's ban on horizontal Hydraulic Fracturing (also known as fracking).1
Though the Administration initially called the claim "baseless," Cuomo's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) late yesterday issued a statement confirming the report.2
The effective ban on this dangerous method of drilling for natural gas was put in place late last year by an executive order from former Governor David Patterson.
Today, as the ban expires, the NYS DEC will announce its recommendations that some fracking be allowed in New York. It's essential we do everything we can to urge Governor Cuomo to maintain the ban, and protect New York's water from dangerous fracking.
Tell Gov. Cuomo: Don't lift New York's fracking ban! Click here to automatically sign the petition.
While the NYS DEC will recommend protecting some areas from fracking, including the watersheds of New York City and Syracuse, they will allow it in others. According to the Times this "would open up New York to one of the fastest-growing — critics would say reckless — areas of the energy industry."
If you're just learning about fracking, it's a relatively new method of drilling for natural gas by injecting water and a mix of nasty, toxic chemicals thousands of feet underground, literally cracking the rock to release trapped gas.3
These chemicals, along with methane gas, can leak through well casings into groundwater, poisoning the water, and in many cases literally causing people's tap water to light on fire!4
Fracking poses many other threats to our water, including the release into rivers and streams of insufficiently treated, and often radioactive, fracking wastewater.5
Incredibly, the EPA has been prevented from regulating fracking under the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act, by a loophole created by Dick Cheney in his secretive and insider-friendly 2005 energy policy. That's why New York State's ban is so important.
Take action now to urge Governor Cuomo to reject NYS DEC's recommendations.
