David McWater came up in the conversation and perhaps the catalyst for why he would want to be a power broker in the East Village and the answer is kitchen. I was told when he opened Doc Holiday he was forced by the community board to add a kitchen and he did not like that.
The police like to say the community board is there in an advisory position but the board doesn't seem to agree and McWater although no longer chair -- finally still can't walk away and why should he. He owns so many bars and from his rule he can best make sure he profits. The obscene bar crawls with drunk people in Santa outfits that traumatized kids walking through Tompkins confused by the proliferation of drunk Santas unusual behavior profited McWater more than any bar owner.
Council woman Rosie Mendez did not think it was a conflict of interest, nor did anyone on the community board or Scott Stringer. For them it was a love in and Alexandra Militano and I had one conversation only and than I requested she never contacted me again.
I had spoken with Stetzer about Pour House -- how did this bar float past SLA with two full bars. The Pour House is an annex to Webster Hall -- obviously rich and powerfully connected players that had the connections to make this happen.
I asked Militano about the bar at 3rd Avenue and 11 and her response -- what bar?
She works for the DA's office? The same DA's office that seemed to drag it's feet when it came to prosecuting the rape cops of the 9th Precinct. How cozy and yes, I was surprised when an activist told me Community Board 3 is called community bar but why should I be...it is just one big orgy of admiration club or it was for way too long, pre-Mendez as well.
