NYPD: Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic Nervous System
Dear NYPD: Learning a little bit about the difference between the sympathetic nervous system aka "fight or flight " --- think of "s" sympathetic nervous system as in "s" for stress vs. parasympathetic nervous system "p" for peace, relaxing, rest and digest -- constructively decompressing will help you with policing and understanding decompressing from a job where you might be stuck in "fight or flight" the sympathetic system even more than the average New Yorker.
If you don't have the tools to decompress than it might leave folks prone to drinking and other let's say over stimulating activities that in the long run won't have "an exciting aftermath" but the reality is the body and mind need down time.
The sympathetic "fight or flight" can mean the different between life or death if you read just a little bit about on this topic and than understanding your body's responses the knowledge might help you to take a deep breath and not make a regretful error because the NYPD are like medical doctors in the sense if they make a mistake at work it could mean someone's death or even their own.
It is really important to decompress and in a constructive ways. When someone is stuck in perpetual stresses expect very uncool destructive behaviors that will be regretted down the road. Being stuck in perpetual stress is bad for one's health.
Understanding sympathetic vs. parasympathetic isn't hard to do but it can make a difference...so google and find ways to get in to the parasympathetic "peace" mode as much as possible. It's good for your health and good for your policing.
Note: I just quickly looked around and found these. If the sympathetic system is way too stimulated and one doesn't have the constructive tools to calm body and mind down than expect too much drinking, too much "etc." as in activities that might self destructive and foolish.

The sympathetic system is fight or the flight system and its nerves direct more blood to the muscles whereas decreases blood supply to the gut. It increases the heart rate and blood pressure and also activates the body's mechanisms to provide immediate energy to face the stressful state. So this system utilizes the body's energy resources just to prepare it for some upcoming stressful state.
