Trump-Varick and Spring, street blocked as death toll continues to rise in this tsunami of commuity crushing development. Is safety a priority?

The streets are blocked off by the NYPD after another person dies and again we all say this never should have happened.

Another person has died...and it brings back the memory of what I call the "crane condo" (12th & 3rd) which I see from my window where miraculously no one died although people where injured.

July 7, 2007 New York Daily News

I also spoke about this, infrastructure concerns, the tsunami of community crushing development and have harmful it has been and of course St. Ann's and NYU's mega dorm destruction for the site at the City Council Task Force Meeting on DOB to a packed house that cheered me like I was Janis Joplin singing take another little piece of my heart. I think a lawyer representing construction workers...the legal ones was applauding me.
If you click on the link for Chelsea Now you can see a photo from the meeting where I spoke up in Dec. 2006 and I put a sticker from www.gvshp.org on my sleeve that was against the Trump development at Varick and Spring. We tried so hard as communities city wide did and continue to do so.
I am not anti-development but I am anti-over the top community crushing development. I remember a pregnant woman who spoke movingly about her concerns for her and her babies health because of being next door to the construction and the city supported the push of this tsunami development and turned a deaf ear city wide to our call to "SLOW DOWN!".

I got this general email from Andrew Berman and I agree and also want to say to this family and to all families that have lost loved ones or had loved ones injured throughout all tsunami of development -- my heart goes out to you....

Dear friend,

By now you have no doubt heard the tragic news of the fatal accident yesterday at the construction site for the Trump SoHo 'Condo-Hotel' at 246 Spring Street at Varick Street (see http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=77496, http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/scaffold-collapse-at-trump-soho-tower-kills-1/, http://wcbstv.com/local/scaffold.collapse.trump.2.629412.html, http://video.wnbc.com/player/?id=205016. We were very very saddened to hear that one worker lost his life and others were seriously injured, and our thoughts go out to the victims and their families and loved ones.

This is a tragedy that never needed to happen. GVSHP and a long list of community and business groups from across the city contended from the beginning that this project illegally violated zoning laws, and should never have been granted building permits by the City. The City continually stood behind this project and allowed it to proceed, even after it was revealed that the developers openly advertised the project as containing illegal residential uses (http://gvshp.org/trump.htm#27Feb07), after 150-year old bones from the graveyard of an abolitionist church were found on the site (http://gvshp.org/trump.htm#13Dec06), after a key member of the development team was found to have a hidden criminal record (www.gvshp.org/trump.htm), after numerous demonstrations by hundreds of neighbors (http://gvshp.org/trump.htm#20Sep07), and after numerous complaints by neighbors about the speed and sloppiness and construction at the site.

The most recent complaints about hasty work came as a legal challenge against the City's approval had been filed by our partners in fighting this project, the SoHo Alliance (http://www.sohoalliance.org/). The challenge must first be heard by the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), a legal body appointed by the Mayor to review appeals of decisions by City agencies. While work on the Trump project has moved at a lightning pace, months after the filing of the appeal the BSA has stonewalled and still not set a date for the hearing. Before this, the city's Department of Buildings similarly stonewalled and refused to release the required paperwork to allow a legal challenge to move ahead.

We are working with the SoHo Alliance to get a hearing sate set as soon as possible, and we will alert the public as to how they can participate as soon as possible. While we are grateful that following this tragedy construction on the site has temporarily been put on hold, we will continue to fight to see the permits for this project overturned.
