9th Precinct preparing for Holiday party NYPD community outreach

I saw Santa rushing by and a big turn out from the community as well as a van from the NY Blood Center so the 9th Precinct and the area across the street was alive with energy and people in need as well as those ready to give...

As usual I am rushing off to another destination but this is one aspect of policing that many people miss or take for granted...community outreach.

Post Script: Passed by much later and took a peek -- saw children jumping up and down from happiness -- which is nice to see

Note: Dec 18 Jim writes his cel phone no. on the sidewalk asking people to help him..I can't help based on his treatment of me last time I did. I had called the VA several times asking them to help Jim. I know they have more than one Jim Power so I made sure to clarify who his but because I am not a family member I can't get them to help. If I was a family member I am not sure I could get them to help him.

Jim's cel no. is 656-236-1547 If you want to give him a gift go to a store up the stairs like the one on St. Marks Place across from where Kim's Video used to be and ask them to put cel phone minutes on it for him. I did that when I got Jim to the VA hospital. I put 50 dollars on his phone but he spent a big part of that money yelling at me and trashing me so it is your call...

The weather is brutal and I don't know how he and Jesse Jane who has been through more than a dog should, can get through this bitter storm at their ages. Jesse gets a special place in Heaven when her time comes because she has assisted Jim above and beyond but she also has endure more any dog should. At one point after Jim got out of the hospital she had her tail between her legs and I have never seen her scared like that. She has endured great hardships. My Mom has a picture of Jesse on her office door and calls Jesse the Golden Dog. Jesse is an Angel dog. Orvis, George Bliss's dog (now in Heaven) --- I use to walk or rather run with Orvis circa 20 years ago when George lived across from my windows on 12th Street. Orvis and Jesse are my two most favorite beloved East Village dogs.

Jim and Jesse are older and being mostly homeless takes a toll...like so many characters that manage to remain in the East Village but often don't have homes -- aging and the harsh conditions of their lives really take a toll which can't be ignored.

Sometimes I walk in to Tompkins and it really seems like an outdoor "home" -- the benches filled with people that should or could be in a home but there is no home with trained professionals including doctors, nurses, social workers, etc. caring for them, especially as they age...New York, NY...

A major storm is coming. I want everyone including animals inside safe and warm....

Mary House a supporter of the tenants that fought eviction 47 E 3rd St. Catholic Worker Christmas Party 2009

I got permission to take a photo of the rehearsal. It was so nice to be inside Mary House where you can feel the energy of goodness and people that clearly want to make a difference.
A reunion of some of the tenants 47 East 3rd Street, Mary House is next door and such a supportive neighbor. It was a mass eviction. I also had to leave my home of 20 years so it was a lot of upheaval. Nice to see these wonderful people and be reunited on 3rd Street once more.
There was so much art up and I decided to just photograph one art work...note: I had a stomach ache so I decided to run home but I felt great happiness from being surrounded by some much positive energy. If you look really closely one woman is singing in the choir and she has her beautiful baby in a papoose. The beautiful baby would punctuate their singing which delighted many enthusiastic participants that showed up a little too early.

Hanukah Bush or a Christmas Tree or just a tree -- it is up to you -- stream of consciousness -- Jay and I watched as the NYPD from the 9th Precinct and EMS workers helped Edgar off the street. I have a series of photos of Edgar. Like Karl aka Santa he is a gentle soul but trapped in the viscous cycle of drinking. He couldn't walk...his legs didn't seem to be working.

I walked up to him when he was seated in the chair the EMS workers brought to carry him to the ambulance. I said Hi Edgar! I told him I was glad he would be inside and not out in the street tonight because it is too cold. He told me there are bigger problems. I could see from his legs not working and swelling...yes, he does have bigger problems... and you can only pray for him....I really don't know what else to say. He took my gloved hand and he kissed my hand. Jay and I said goodbye.

Juan, Excellent reporting. Heart breaking -- I wish we could put a big sign up with 24 hour coverage on the world web web and TV-- Tax Payers this is how your money is being mis-spent. The pension scandals at City Hall, City Council members stealing tax payers money, fake orgs. nepotism...People ask me "Is there really a conflict of interest committee?" How sad is that. They do not do their job so people think the conflict of interest board does not really exist. Juan, how much do we pay them or do they do this job on a volunteer basis to help out friends?

MTA board member calls Bloomberg and Patterson dead beat dads in relation to MTA

Governor Patterson has to go...I know people did not like Spitzer but Paterson is just awful and should never have found his way to governorship....Didn't Paterson pay for hotel rooms for adulterous sex with campaign money or tax payer money...can't remember...there are so many scandals by politicians and athletes can't keep up.

I came in on the tail end of Nancy Grace...just enough to hear more sickening details of Tiger Woods sickening behavior and it is hard to believe he could be truly texting mistress Rachel for a hook up underscoring how unfit he is to be a father, parent and husband....

At the end of the show they showed a stunning young man age 22 that just died in the line of duty in the military and it was said when he returned he wanted to be a police officer...I think his name was Alexander Rosa... It was a huge win -- Mike Bloomberg just barely winning....can't imagine if we Fed Up New Yorkers had got it together and got a bus as we talked of in a meeting and drove from borough to borough...if the press had reported what was no secret -- the many hang up calls Mike Bloomberg's campaign were receiving as well as "this number has been disconnected" because so many people had been displaced, so many mass evictions and other crafty ways to displace....

so it was no surprise people were angry and most especially being denied a referendum....

With the MTA doomsday budget and more hardships coming to NYC it is just going to get worse....so put on your safety belts, your hard hats, be careful -- the streets are a mess in so many ways.... I am hoping for some high profile arrests of politicians -- that is for sure.

More people will be leaving because of the cuts, taxes, higher bills, higher everything...

The MTA is like the USPS -- they don't have to run a successful business and they have no motivation to do so

The USPS lost aprox. 14 billion dollars in approximately the last 3 years... The USPS has customer service that makes the Mafia look warm and cuddly and the air sale by the USPS to NYU so NYU could tear down the historic +St. Ann's from 1847 was illegal because the USPS had to notify the State of New York and they did not confident the USPS could above the law because of it's federal status just like the USPS chronically blocking the fire hydrant outside my now ex-home of 20 years.

Do the USPS and the MTA have to run a successful business? The answer is clearly "NO" and the tax payers pay in too many ways to count including absorbing cuts, high prices for rides and stamps, higher taxes -- you name it and just like bailing out Wall Street most New Yorkers do not have the benefits that these workers have.

The New York Post really seems to be going down hill and in the mean times Rupert Murdoch wants to charge us to get on line and read the rag. He wants everyone to charge people to read newspapers on line.

He recently gave Ashley Dupree a job as columnist....her photo was placed at the very top of a list of columnist on the website that consider themselves professionals.

It seems to me that if Mr. Murdoch wants to charge people to read The New York Post on line he better make Ashely Dupree editor and chief. Than he can have the website he longs for...one he charge "readers" although the emphasis will be on photos and videos and make a lot of money.

HAHAHAHAHA!! So, after a humiliating defeat, Mayor Bloomberg spinelessly attempts to spin the story by blaming a Council Member from the Bronx? Bloomberg's influence is clearly diminished, and his third term has not even officially begun! Bloomberg is slowly becoming the "out-of-touch" billionaire he has been accused of being... or maybe he is just finally showing his true colors. Instead, Bloomberg should simply have the courage to admit the following: "The jobs that would've been created by a mall in Kingsbridge would pay $7.25 an hour, or about $1,160 a month before taxes. I know that a simple 2-bedroom apartment in Kingsbridge is at least $1,000 a month, so the people hired for these jobs would have to work a 40-hour workweek with little or no benefits, and would STILL have to apply for food stamps for their families. I cannot in good conscience be a party to perpetuating poverty so that my friends in real estate can buy yet another European or Caribbean vacation home."

The NY Daily News exposed city council members in bed with developers getting kickbacks or should I say campaign contributions. Bloomberg was not alone pushing a tsunami of community crushing development aiding and abetting developers. Christine Quinn hired top law firms that specialize in White Collar crime for her and staff. Mike's humilating win sent a message and city council is responding but too little too late.

Great News, Street Photographer Patrick Barr has housing he is very joyful to have, miracles do happen

A year ago he could never imagine he would have the housing he does. It is a studio and he is very happy. He described it as a miracle. I have purchased so many of his photos he has given me some as gifts. I have a lot of NYPD photos! One of my favorite..."Tough Town for a Clown" which is this adorable clown looking not so happy as he is handcuffed and lead away. I have never ever been handcuffed and or arrested. I have a series on Patrick's photos on YouTube.

Patrick is so funny and a character in the best sense. He loves golfing and does it often in the street with mini-milk cartons he has made in to art. He stands by a photo taken of him golfing by a French gentleman.

I have met Patrick's Dad who is a really nice man and I hear his parents are really happy for him.

14th Street ask the NYPD for help a couple fighting

I was one of a small crowd in the West Village watching a couple fighting....At one point she seemed to lean up against an empty police car as if she hoped an officer would materialize. I do not think he hit her but he threw something at her, I think twice and they both crossed the street.

An NYPD van did pull up and I went over to them. I don't know what the letters on their van meant but their pins on their collar indicated I think Mid Town, I forget....I asked them, please watch the couple across the street and as I said that more friction between the couple erupted and they ended up in the middle of 14th St. so the NYPD officers in the van pulled up to them...for some reason she ran over to me and hide behind me maybe because I am so much bigger than her.

The NYPD quietly rolled east and the man seemed to move along with them.

I turned to her and asked her do you have a place to go? Are you okay? Do you need to go to a shelter? I was going to call 311 if she needed help. She told me he was drunk. She needed money for a train. I handed her money for a train. She started to move east. I said, no, don't go in that direction. He is in that direction. There is a subway on that corner pointing west in the opposite direction. The couple being gently parted in in opposite directions seemed to work at least for now...

She thanked me and she headed west.

community member tells me Jim put sign up in the dog run he needs money and a place to stay

I saw Jim in the dog run but avoided him like the plague since he added me to the famous "jim crazy rant" thing he does but it was worse because he blatantly lied about me so much so I can never help me again. Me being me -- I still have these impulses or wishes -- oh I wish I could take him in but really for Jesse because I love her so. She has been through too much. Many others have offered him and Jesse shelter and the amazing Cooper Square Housing activists actually got him housing but he would have to fill out a form and for Jim that was impossible for the same "Jim reasons" that make him rant and rave about the people that actually have helped him. Jim is a Viet Nam Vet and he needs care and support. When I called the VA they had a recording for Vets from so many wars including our most recent. As usual they is way too much need and way too little resources.

My friend said it had rained so hard and the sign was hard to read but it she got the gist...

She called Jim my friend. I told her the horrible lies Jim said and said I could no longer help him. That although not a family member I had even called the VA hospital several times, stated I was not a family member and to please help him including even when he was in the VA hospital that I payed to transfer him to from Brooklyn to Manhattan when he fell and broke his wrist and shoulder. Again it is amazing he did so and still continues to make high quality art work. He is like a character from Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome his body so twisted by this life's journey but the drive to make art still so strong and his work is so high level. He remains so productive with no home or stable resources or support.

I told her if she sees him and it feels right than go for it -- give him so money.

So that is the Jim update. Sad news.... It is the same situation -- the Jim viscous cycle but the very sad news it he is older and in far worse shape... I will always admire the high quality of Jim's art work, his very high level of art and work ethic under the worst conditions possible but he is just getting older and in far worse condition. Jesse is old and she has endured extreme situations and circumstances that no dog should so I tell myself as true for us all there is a limited time on earth. I don't know how long she and even he can hang on in extreme conditions, etc. That being said, one store owner that always helped Jim and gave him money to take Jesse to the vet -- and Jim never took her cut Jim off as well. He couldn't forgive not taking Jesse to the vet when he gave Jim the money has gone through major surgery so shocking and radical it is a miracle he is alive....Sometimes I think Jim will outlive us.

Note: HBO ran a documentary on a man like Jim with similar art work located in Philadelphia I believe, I am extremely tired..., and he was far more mentally ill even having been rushed to the hospital for hurting himself in a gruesome way but he also was married and had two sons. With medications he seems to do better.

Jim's art is powerful and his work may be the largest out door free museum in NYC.

Note: I had even called community affairs awhile ago and stated Jim is in worse shape. If anything happens to him please do not send Jesse to a shelter. I almost cried. She has been through too much and she should not be put in a dog shelter. I said call Clayton Patterson. He is in the phone book. He would take her if anything happened.

FYI: Clayton and his wife Elsa took Jim and Jesse in. I don't know many people that would open there doors to a homeless man and his dog but they did. They too were the victims of Jim's ranting and raving lies. Anyway Jim may out live us...who knows...sad that he is desperate for housing but is a place he has been many a time.... Sad....
