They need all the assistance we can give them. This is a terrible situation and their problems could, in turn, become ours tomorrow. If we give them a hand and write these letters today, they can help us in our own struggles in the future. We must band together or the forces of evil will eventually win!

Dear Friends,
Please try to attend next Tuesday's "500 Foot Hearing" for the 22-story Cooper Square Hotel. If unable to attend, please send testimony to the following State Liquor Authority executives and Gov. Eliot Spitzer re next week's "500 Foot Hearing" for the Cooper Square Hotel, which is seeking multiple liquor licenses for 3 restaurants, 3 bars, a 2nd floor terrace,
and an enormous garden space.......all of which would bring an estimated 782 additional
into what has already become a neighborhood war zone of noise, garbage, traffic
congestion, horn-honking, sidewalk cigarette smoking, cell phone shouting, vomiting,
and fighting.

500 Foot Hearings are mandated by the government whenever liquor licenses
are sought within 500 feet of 3 or more other liquor licenses.
The Cooper Square Hotel is located within 500 feet of 19 other liquor licenses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's also across the street from the 150 residents of the JASA Greene residence,
whose residents already have quite enough noise from the bars on their Bowery and
4th street sides. The hundreds of extra bar patrons the hotel wants will mean hundreds
of extra taxis and limos. The traffic congestion this will bring can be a matter of life
or death to the JASA senior/disabled residents if an ambulance is called and is unable
to reach them quickly.

Traffic congestion on east 5th and Bowery can also mean a matter of life or death
if 9th Precinct Police cars are unable to get through east 5th street in a timely fashion.
East 5th is the emergency route for the Precinct's northbound calls.

207 East 5th Street is located right next to the hotel, with some residents' windows
a mere 30 inches from the hotel's terrace. A year ago the hotel volunteered to
install soundproof windows.......an open admission that there is going to be a massive
amount of noise. It's also a very cynical and none too subtle suggestion that those
tenants will never again be able to peacefully open their windows.

If the 500 ft. rule really means anything, the SLA should not be granting unlimited
liquor licenses to this hotel in an area already burdened with 19 liquor licenses.
To do so would be reckless, and would seriously endanger the health, quality of
life, and safety of the entire community.

Again, please try to attend the 500 Foot Hearing on the Cooper Square Hotel or
send testimonial letters to the State Liquor Authority.
