November 9, 2010 Overwhelming Opposition to NYU 400 ft. Tall Tower Plan at CB 2 Last Night, But Board Delays Resolution Dear friend, Hundreds and hundreds of people turned out for last night’s standing-room-only Community Board #2 public hearing on NYU’s landmarks application for a 400 ft. tall tower on Bleecker Street in the Silver Towers complex. By a hand count all but a half dozen attendees were strongly opposed to the plan, there was strong testimony AGAINST the plan by a representative of NYU faculty, and by far the majority of Community Board committee members spoke out against the plan. Read GVSHP’s testimony HERE. However, while a decision of the committees was expected last night and typically occurs directly following a public hearing, the leadership of the board delayed any vote or resolution, which now may not take place until later in the month. Thus I ask you to hold the full Community Board #2 public meeting on your calendar, as we may need to turn out again to urge the board to reject the NYU 400 ft. tall tower plan. That meeting will take place on Thursday, November 18th starting at 6pm, also at Grace Church School, 94 Fourth Avenue (at 11th Street).  We will let you know if we need you at this meeting. UNTIL THEN, THERE ARE ADDITIONAL WAYS YOU CAN HELP: Please send a letter to the Community Board #2 Chair and to additional elected officials urging them to reject NYU’s 400 ft. tall tower plan (if you have already written to City Councilmember Margaret Chin and Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair Robert Tierney, there are additional elected officials to write to; if you have not written them, please do so as well) > > Thank you to everyone who has been so vocal and passionate on this issue.
